Elon Musk’s Lawyers Urge Judge to Block Sam Altman’s Request for Zuckerberg Chats

The ongoing feud between Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has taken another twist—this time involving Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Musk’s lawyers have asked a U.S. The judge has been asked to block OpenAI’s bid for access to Musk and Zuckerberg’s private communications, further intensifying the ongoing legal battle.

Musk vs. OpenAI: A Renewed Clash

Musk and Altman have been locked in a bitter legal dispute for months. At the center of this battle is Musk’s alleged $97.4 billion bid for OpenAI’s assets, a move that OpenAI claims was designed to harm the company.

OpenAI claims that Musk’s legal team contacted Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year in an attempt to involve him in the multibillion-dollar acquisition plan. According to the company, Zuckerberg turned down the proposal. After making that claim, OpenAI petitioned the court to compel Meta to hand over any documents or messages tied to the alleged discussions

Musk’s Lawyers Push Back

In their most recent filing, Musk’s legal team argued that OpenAI already has the necessary bid-related records. They called the company’s request an “unnecessary and expansive discovery” that doesn’t fit with the current stage of the trial.

OpenAI disagrees. Its lawyers insist their request is narrow and targeted, covering only a limited time period. They also stressed the need for depositions—including testimony from Musk himself—since, according to them, many of the most important conversations may have been verbal rather than written.

The Bigger Picture: A $97 Billion Battle

The dispute began last year when Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman, taking issue with the company’s transition to a for-profit structure. OpenAI responded in April with a countersuit, accusing Musk of actively trying to damage the company’s reputation and future.

Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers decided that Musk will have to answer claims suggesting his social media activity, public comments, and the contested $97 billion bid were part of a deliberate effort to weaken OpenAI

What’s Next in the Courtroom

The legal showdown isn’t ending anytime soon. A jury trial is set for spring 2026, meaning Musk, Altman, and potentially Zuckerberg could all play central roles as the high-profile case unfolds.
