The Dollar Losing Its Grip
The U.S. dollar has been the backbone of global finance, but that dominance is slipping fast. Leading this shift are BRICS nations—a group Trump once accused of harbouring anti-American policies. Last year, Trump threatened 100% tariffs on BRICS if they ditched the dollar. This year, he warned of an extra 10% tariff on nations that move with BRICS. Dollarisation is Trump and America’s biggest nightmare. Russia and China are working on alternative financial and payment systems. India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), one of the most advanced digital systems worldwide, is already being extended to neighbours, showing how India-US relations are tied to global finance.
Digital Payments and Local Trade
China is pushing its own cross-border digital payment platforms. These moves reflect a wider plan to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar. Among BRICS, China and Russia already trade more in local currencies. India has not shown a clear stand yet. Still, one strong moment at the summit was Modi and Putin huddled in an apparent show of trust. That image spoke of growing ties, with many linking it back to the sensitive state of India-US relations.
BRICS Unity and Trump’s U-Turn
India, China, and Russia, as part of BRICS, are signalling greater cooperation. Some said America lost India and Russia to China. But within hours Trump made a U-turn, called Modi “a good friend”, and stressed the U.S.–India bond. This was very different from his earlier remarks when he called India “a debt economy” and even warned of 50% tariffs, the highest in the world—again putting pressure on India-US relations.
Divided Voices in Washington
Trump’s own team had voices like Peter Navarro attacking India. These harsh moves got criticism at home and abroad. Democrats said Trump was alienating a key ally. Even his base was divided. Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley spoke clearly, saying America must treat India as the valued free and democratic partner it is. Her words reflected the wider importance of India-US relations in Washington debates.
Europe and Global South Pressure
Europe warned Washington not to lose focus. Finnish President Sauli Niinistö urged America to act with dignity in global policy. Putin also slammed tariffs on India, saying America cannot treat India like that. Japan too stepped up when Modi visited Tokyo, with Tokyo pledging $67.9 billion in India over 10 years. These steps proved how India-US relations are linked to global alliances and investments.
India Becomes Indispensable
America is learning that India is central. From Ukraine talks to European discussions, India is now at the core. Macron and others invited Modi to global meetings, even ones Trump joined. India’s weight is undeniable. American strategy needs India, and India US relations are now at the heart of US foreign policy.
India’s Confident Stand
New Delhi is showing it has partners to lean on and will not bow under U.S. pressure. India today is indispensable, undeniable, and unshakeable. But Washington still has time to repair ties. A steady and clear policy on India can rebuild trust. For a president who acts on impulse, returning to bipartisan consensus is a must — proving again that India-US relations shape the future balance of power.
